Fairview Northeast Clinic moving to New Brighton in spring 2008

“Close, for comfort,” is its slogan on bus bench advertisements around Northeast.
But come next year “Far, for convenience” might be a more fitting slogan for Fairview Northeast Clinic.
A letter sent to patients this month says the clinic is leaving Johnson Street in spring 2008 for a new, expanded facility four miles away, north of I-694 at Silver Lake Road in New Brighton.
“We will be moving and expanding to better meet your needs,” the clinic’s letter says.
The new clinic will have larger exam rooms, an expanded lobby area and upgraded technology like digital X-ray services, the letter says. It will also have a pharmacy in the same building and more off-street parking.
The current staff and providers at the 2849 Johnson St. NE location will move to the New Brighton clinic. It’s also added a podiatrist and physician assistant.
The letter says the clinic will update patients again when a move date is determined.
Johnson Street businesses, already feeling a drop in traffic from the I-35W bridge collapse, aren’t looking forward to losing a major anchor in their node.
Ed Hilbrich, owner of Opposable Thumbs Books, said his shop and others on the block benefit from people passing time before or after appointments.
“It’s hard to quantify,” Hilbrich said, “but it will have an affect upon business.” Dan Haugen

This is a most unwelcome development, yet another abandonment of the central city. My family has used this clinic since moving to Northeast, and the location and facilities have worked quite well for us. I have been able to get to my appointments either before or after my work day downtown, going by bus or bike, though for family appointments a car has been the way to go.
But this move? It sure doesn’t look like a decision with Northeast folks in mind, and I’m not interested in trekking out to 694 and Silver Lake Road. Bye-bye, Fairview.
But I’ll support Johnson Street whenever I can.
I’m with Peter on this one. I’ve given money to Fairview as a customer for 22 years. Moving…don’t let the door hit you the @ss. I’ll never be a customer again.
I too am dismayed that the clinic is moving. It’s been my lifeline for 27 years. My elderly mom visits the clinic often, and since I’m her “medi-cab” it will be a hassle to drive farther. BUT: Mom and I will follow the clinic because we LOVE our doctors there! I credit Dr. DeRoche and Dr. Reid with keeping mom out of a nursing home.
It’s a wee comfort that the pharmacy is staying, but I hate for the clinic to leave our convenient corner in the ‘hood.
