What’s the future hold in store for the Shoreham Yards Roundhouse?

News Section

The red brick, semicircular building was once a repair and maintenance shop for one of the largest and busiest rail hubs in the Upper Midwest.

Now, city officials and neighborhood leaders are considering possible reuses for the historic Shoreham Yards Roundhouse.

A public meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. tonight at Columbia Golf Course, 3300 Central Ave. NE, to brainstorm ideas for the future of the roundhouse and surrounding area, whether it be industrial jobs, a shopping center, greenspace or something else entirely.

The structure, built in 1883, is located just west of 29th and Central avenues. Its owner, Canadian Pacific Railway, plans to use the adjacent site but has not committed to preserving the roundhouse.

The city and the Shoreham Area Advisory Committee are sponsoring a reuse study, with the cooperation of Canadian Pacific Railway. Tonight’s meeting will include a presentation on the study process and a chance to meet the preservation consultant team working on the study of reuses.

For more information about the meeting please call Kevin Carroll, senior project coordinator with the city, at 673-5181 or visit www.shorehamyards.org.  Dan Haugen
