From the Editor: Back on the Beat

Editor’s Note

AlaskaMy wife and I returned this weekend from our Alaskan honeymoon. Among the highlights: sea kayaking off the Kenai Peninsula, stuffing ourselves with crab legs and halibut tacos, and scaling the Harding Icefield and Flattop Mountain (pictured).

My legs have fully recovered after a couple days of rest, and I’m ready to climb my next mountain. That is, the Northeast Beat e-mail inbox. If you’re waiting for a reply from me, be patient. If it’s urgent, you might want to drop me another message at editor (at) northeastbeat.com.

I plan to start ramping up the Northeast Beat again starting now. We’ve been mostly dormant for the past couple months, so if you’re reading this, pass the word to a neighbor that the Beat is back. Here’s a quick summary of what’s happening around the neighborhood this morning:

  • Sunday’s Minneapolis Bike Tour was a success, with more than 4,500 bicyclists pedalling the city’s 40-plus miles of parkways. The Star Tribune reported that energy foods ran into short supply at some stops along the route. Columbia Grounds was hopping as we read the newspapers there yesterday morning, with riders requesting things like bread and honey.
  • The Interstate 35W bridge collapse has made Northeast streets noisier and more congested. Council Member Diane Hofstede tells KARE 11 that residential areas are seeing an increase in large truck traffic. The Beltrami neighborhood association opposes temporary interstate ramps proposed by MnDOT at East Hennepin Avenue.
  • The Northeast Citizen Patrol and residents of the Bottineau neighborhood are organizing protests against Gabby’s Saloon, the Marshall Avenue nightclub that’s been a source of frequent complaints by neighbors. The group is planning to picket outside the bar every Thursday and Saturday. For more info e-mail Lisa at lisam@nepatrol.org.
  • The Holland neighborhood’s fall music-and-movies in the park series is underway. Each Tuesday in September catch a great Northeast band at 7 o’clock, followed by a movie at dusk at the amphitheater at 22nd Avenue and Quincy Street. Tomorrow night features rockers Ouija Radio and “Hud.” On Sept. 25 catch Kruddler and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” More info on the events here.

So, what have I missed? Anyone ride in the Minneapolis Bike Tour? Any thoughts on the East Hennepin Avenue interstate ramps proposal? How about the issues with Gabby’s? Leave a comment!  Dan Haugen
