Podcast: Northeast block party to benefit Kenya school project

Podcast Section

Hans Johnson

On Saturday night, Duluth band Low will take to the stage at the first annual Red Stag Northeast Block Party. (See event calendar for details.) A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit an organization called the Maasai School Project, which has helped build a school in rural Kenya and is raising money for supplies and adult literacy classes there. The effort is a collaboration of Low’s Alan Sparhawk and Hans Johnson, a musician and anthropology student in Minneapolis. The Northeast Beat spoke with Johnson today about the school project and his travels to Kenya to document music. He’s released two CDs of Maasai music, both of which will be for sale at Saturday’s block party. More information is also available on his website, Laleyio.
