Diamonds Coffee Shoppe seeks beer, wine license

Diamonds Diamonds Coffee Shoppe customers could soon be able to enjoy a pint of beer with their grilled cheese deluxe. The four-and-a-half-year-old coffee and sandwich shop in the Thorpe Building is preparing to apply to the city for a beer and wine license.

"The only thing that’s going to change is we’re going to add some beer and wine to the menu," co-owner Lucy Bacon told the Logan Park Neighborhood Association at Wednesday evening’s neighborhood meeting. "It’s not going to be a bar."

Neighborhood board members didn’t voice any opposition to the proposal. However, because the topic wasn’t on the agenda, the board will have to discuss it again in March before voting whether to write a letter of support for the license, neighborhood president Jeff Kraker said.

If granted by the city, it’d be the first beer and wine license in Logan Park. Bacon said it’s possible it could go into effect April 1 but probably more likely it would start July 1.

Also at Wednesday’s Logan Park meeting: The board talked about how to move forward with an idea to design and install an art project somewhere in the park. Anyone interested in participating can contact Renatta Hunt at hunt0158@umn.edu. Dan Haugen

  1. I live a block away in NE Park and would love to see Diamonds with a beer and wine license.

  2. I see no reason why they should not get it.

There are entertainment ramifications though when you up to wine and beer.
When Betsy’s back porch cafe got thier wine and beer license, they lost thier allowance to amplify acoustic guitars with electricity. The same may apply to diamonds, who has hosted some very talented musicians in the back of the coffee shop.

  3. I see no reason to “bar” them from getting the license. Unfortunately, I’ve seen many coffee shops try to take the jump to evening beer/wine and wind up out of business within the year.

    I’d hate to see that.
